A bearing shell is the contact component between a plain bearing and the journal. It features a smooth, tile‑shaped semi‑cylindrical surface, and is normally manufactured from wear‑resistant materials such as bronze and anti‑friction alloys. Bearing shells fall into two types: solid and split. The solid‑type bearing shell is commonly referred to as a bushing. Solid bushings are available with or without oil grooves. Bearing shells are clearance‑fitted with journals and generally do not rotate with the shaft.
During the operation of a plain bearing, a thin oil film is required between the bearing shell and the rotating shaft for lubrication. Poor lubrication will result in direct friction between the bearing shell and the rotating shaft, generating extremely high temperatures. Even though bearing shells are made of special high‑temperature‑resistant alloy materials, the excessive heat from direct friction can still burn them out.
